From our desk: A bimonthly newsletter exploring community, parenting and play.
“There can be no keener revelation of society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children”. Nelson Mandela.
Welcome to the Bi-Monthly Newsletter from Parents’ Nook. This space we are creating is a space of reflection and action. We are trying to create care-paces for families based on the local parenting community’s needs and thus creating a local economy thriving through the public goods phenomenon. So we encourage you to participate. We believe that on-the-ground community experimentation will provide us the inspiration and guidance needed for taking the project ahead as per individual community’s needs. Our aim is to build complex adaptive systems for parenting communities attuned to the needs of the people and little humans participating in it.
Our dream: We reimagine a world where Nooks collaborating with neighborhood public spaces may become a futuristic public good scenario, and support and regenerate the community care-economy in the process.
Observation:The pandemic has brought the issue of child stress and anxiety to the forefront, but focusing on the mental health of the parenting community should not be a reactionary trend to our current challenges. Nurturing the whole child by offering an environment that helps children stay balanced and thrive both academically and emotionally needs to become a mainstay culture in our community.
As we think and reflect on the topics, we would also like to raise a few questions in this edition of our newsletter which we would like to explore with you all.
Questions we are exploring while building the project:
We have been researching and working with families, caregivers, educators and technologists for the last 4 yrs and wondering what that world might look like where raising children might become a community effort ? What Does that community look like? Is it even a model possible or we are dreaming a world of utopian dreams? Where do we start to create such a world? Is it even a possibility?
And how does technology might step in to create such a world?
Through Nooks, we are designing an ecosystem where we are creating communal aspects of learning and human development as a dominant social value. We are giving importance to these aspects to actualize the greatest human potential. And we invite you to participate in building this world with us together. We will start with a few details over the next few newsletters in how we are approaching while trying to solve the problem, we would love to have your thoughts, guidance and participation as we build this together.
In today’s newsletter we are exploring the concepts of co-operation, plurality and their relationship to Nook play spaces.
What we are up to:
Restarting in-person Nooks from June 15th:
We are delighted to share with you all that we will be able to start Nooks @ Oakland Museum from 15th June Onwards.Registration details and Nook Event Calendar and more information here:
We are looking forward to get in touch with caregivers/educators from the local community. If you are a mom/a caregiver/an educator or someone interested in being a facilitator we would love to get in touch. More details here:
If you are an educator living in the East Bay (preferably near Oakland), is aware of our philosophies and has been observing our offerings for the last 3 years, we might want to get in touch with you. We believe there are various other ways that might open up as we have a conversation. We are creating a co-op network of parents, educators and caregivers from our local communities aligned with the shared vision of providing open ended play and a nurturing environment for local communities thus supporting and creating a local economy that is thriving for everyone involved. We believe this is a Common Goods Phenomenon.
We look forward to listening to you and your needs as a community member and how this community project might be able to support you and your family.
With gratitude
Stewards from the Parents' Nook Community.
